Professeur LOW Teck Seng was named "Chevalier" (Knight) of the order of the Légion d’Honneur, a high distinction awarded by the President of the French Republic. A sign of recognition of his significant contribution to the scientific collaboration between Singapore and France, he was presented with the decoration by Alain Fuchs, President of CNRS. The ceremony took place on 17 March 2016 at the Embassy of Singapore in Paris.
An expert of permanent magnet machines, Professor Low is the founding director of the Data Storage Institute (then named "Magnetics Technology Centre"), which significantly contributed to the development of the data storage industry, a sector in which Singapore excels. Educator at heart, he is a Professor of electric & electronic engineering at the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. He is the founding principal of Republic Polytechnic, a tertiary education institution which aims at training the next generation of technologists, innovators and entrepreneurs.
Professor Low has been the Managing Director of A*STAR before becoming the CEO of the National Research Foundation. It is in this role that he signed in 2014 an agreement between NRF and its French counterpart ANR that finances french-singaporean joint projects in material sciences, nanotechnologies and nanosystems.
