Presentation of the Laboratory
Based in Bangkok with antennas in different countries of the region, IRASEC aims to develop French research on contemporary Southeast Asia. One of IRASEC’s priorities is the forging of partnerships with universities, research centers and think tanks across the Southeast Asian region.
The Institute’s various research projects cover political, social, economic and environmental processes, as well as regional integration dynamics among the region’s 11 countries — Brunei Darussalam, Burma, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
In addition to producing regional and country-based research works, the Institute identifies ASEAN as an object of study in itself.

Research axes
With its own researchers based in the various countries of Southeast Asia, IRASEC may closely observe the region’s social, economic and geopolitical realities and recompositions.
Research themes
The Institute’s cross-cutting programs are based on intraregional cooperation and can be grouped into the following five priority research areas :
- Political Transitions (political cultures, civil society, ethnic and religious nationalism)
- Territorial Challenges (maritime and land spaces, natural resources, sustainable cities)
- Social Dynamics (law, education, health, women’s rights and status)
- Environment, climatic change, relationship to nature
- ASEAN : economic perspectives and regional integration
