There are currently 4 CNRS international joint units (UMIs) in Southeast Asia, and 1 joint unit in social sciences and humanities in partnership with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UMIFRE).

How does a UMI work ?

An international joint lab (UMI) is :

  • a joint laboratory with permanent CNRS staff
  • located either in in France or abroad
  • staffed by personnel from both CNRS and the partner country
  • headed by a director, jointly appointed by CNRS and the partner institution
  • created for a duration of 4 years, renewable twice.
